Citrus junos (Citrus Yuzu) is a small, evergreen, hardy citrus tree that is popular in East Asia for producing high yields of edible citrus fruits. The Yuzu Tree bears abundant, easy-to-peel, 3” diameter yellow-orange fruit with tasty, lemon-lime flavour.
Yuzu Hardy Citrus Tree fruit can be eaten fresh but is more commonly used to make jams, jellies, juices, and liquors. Prized in Japan, the Yuzu Ichandrin rind has a very strong lemon-lime fragrance, which can be shaved and used to enhance flavours in soups, fish dishes, candies, and teas. This versatile Yuzu Lemon Tree fruit can be used at all stages of maturity from young, underripe, and green to yellow, overripe, and puffy. The flesh has the familiar, acidic, sour taste of lemons and limes, becoming slightly sweeter and less bitter when riper. It contains several large seeds. Yuzu Lime Tree is self-fertile and can produce fruits without other citrus plants nearby.
The foliage is a handsome dark green colour with a shiny, glossy surface. The lovely flowers are fragrant and creamy white coloured. The flowers appear in May-June followed by fruits in the fall (October-December).
Yuzu Japanese Citrus Tree is the hardiest or one of the hardiest citrus tree. It is reportedly hardy to 0°F (-18 °C). If planted outdoors in the ground in zone 7 and 8, applying mulch around the base of the Citrus Yuzu plant and cover the branches with a blanket, can help protect it from cold temperatures. In colder areas, zone 5 and 6, it is recommended to grow the Yuzu tree in a container and bring it indoors or in a warmer area during the winter months (October to April).
