Citrus x tangelo 'Wekiwa', known commonly as Wekiwa Tangelo Tree is a unique cross between Sampson Tangelo and a grapefruit. It produces crops of abundant medium, yellow/yellow-orange fruits with amber-pink flesh. The peel is semi-smooth, leathery, and pebbled with prominent oil glands. Tangelos have a sweet, subtly tart, floral and fruity flavor with low acidity; and a less bitter and sour taste than other citrus varieties. It is great for juicing or eating fresh, in salsas, vinaigrettes, smoothies, sorbets, and mixed into cocktails and sparkling beverages. Pairs well with herbs such as mint, basil, cilantro, rosemary, and parsley; and fruits such as, avocado, pineapple, mango, strawberry, banana, and coconut; as well as, vanilla, dark chocolate, and caramel.
Wekiwa Tangelo tree grows to 6 feet tall and wide, and although it is not a vigorous tree, it is very productive. Will bear fruits in 2 to 3 years. Grow as a specimen plant in a large pot or container, especially where you can enjoy its fragrance, and where it will be easy to harvest for meals and drinks. Overwinter indoors. Must be brought indoors when the temperature dips below -9 °C.
