Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Allgold', or Allgold bamboo shows charming variegations on its culms and leaves: occasional green stripes on its golden culms, and creamy yellow stripes on its glossy green leaves. But the real visual feast is its straight, rigid orange-yellow, red and green culms that mellow to a creamy butterscotch colour. Growing to 25 ft tall and 15 ft wide in warmer climates, Allgold bamboo makes wonderful summer screens and hedges, as well as container plants. Considered a “timber bamboo” its culms reach up to 2” in diameter with right climate.
Happy in full sun or partial shade, it requires well-drained soil. Gain a hardiness zone with winter cover (a heavy poly batt, and a layer of light-coloured plastic). Loves Nettle Tea as a fertilizer.
In USDA Climate Zones expect the following mature size culms heights:
- Zone 8 - over 20 feet
- Zone 7- 14 feet
