Susquehanna Pawpaw (Asimina triloba 'Susquehanna') is a large-fruited, Paw paw plant variety with fruits weighing over one pound! It has one of the largest fruits of all PETERSON™ Pawpaw varieties. The fruit is noted to be very sweet and richly flavourful, with very few seeds. The Susquehanna Pawpaw fruit has a firm buttery texture, and tastes like banana, pineapple and mango all rolled into one delicious treat! Eat it fresh by itself and in salads, or use in preserves, pies, vinaigrettes, and ice-cream.
Make sure you watch for the yellowish-green fruit to ripen to brown in the late summer / fall, as you will want to harvest it before the squirrels and racoons get to it. Ensure the fruit is ripe before harvesting, as unripe fruit can cause nausea.
Asimina triloba 'Susquehanna' has a rounded tree canopy, growing to a height of 6 m (20 feet) in height. The flowers are purple and interesting, but not showy. The leaves stay green well into late summer, eventually turning a bright yellow before they fall.
The Paw paw plant is low maintenance, preferring sun to partial shade and moist to wet, well-drained soils. Typically Pawpaws last 20-30 years. All plants will produce fruit but you need two different seedlings or cultivars for cross pollination - consider planting the native Asimina triloba near by.
