Native of central Asia, Black Goji Berry (Lycium ruthenicum) has traditionally been a high value medicinal plant. The berries are highly nutritious -  rich in Vitamins A, C and E and some essential fatty acids, which is unusual for berries of any kind. They can be eaten raw or cooked, although they should only be eaten when fully ripe. Flowers are lilac coloured and funnel shaped, attracting bees. Berries start out green, turning purple, and then black when fully ripe. A medium sized shrub, with small, greenish grey small leaves, and thorny branches, this plant does well in sunny locations. It can tolerate quite dry conditions, and nutritionally poor soil, making it a prime candidate for that difficult corner in your garden.
