Salix viminalis 'Bowhayes Strain' (Male) is a vigorous ornamental tree that grows quickly to be 19 ft (6 m) by 13 ft (4 m). The trunk is greenish brown, and the long, straight stems are downy. Exceptionally long (6" - 8") green leaves with silver undersides flash silver when the wind blows. Its grey-white catkins bloom from April to May. Catkins slowly turn yellow as they mature. Easy to grow, this basket willow (common osier) makes an excellent hedge. Its rods are among the best to make fedge (fence + hedge), living willow structures, and coarse basketry. Attracts wildlife. Disease and deer resistant.
