Violette de Bordeaux Fig Tree (Ficus carica 'Violette de Bordeaux') is renowned as one of the best tasting and finest fig varieties available. Its deep purple-black skin encloses rich, dark red flesh with intense berry notes, dark molasses sweetness, and a luxurious texture. Flavour intensifies even further when fruit is allowed to slightly shrivel on the tree. The closed fruit eye helps prevent spoilage, making it an excellent choice for reliable harvests. Ideal for fresh eating, drying or use in preserves.

This compact fig tree features deeply lobed green leaves and inconspicuous, self-fertile flowers. An excellent choice for small spaces due to its compact size, Violette de Bordeaux fig tree reaches up to 3 m (10 ft). Although considered a dwarf variety, it is very hardy and vigorous – often producing two abundant crops in a season. The breba (first, early-season crop growing on the previous year’s wood) can be harvested in June-July, while the second crop will be ready in September-October. Typically, Violette de Bordeaux hardy fig trees begin bearing fruit in their second or third year. Birds may be attracted to the fruits, so keep a watchful eye when your tree starts producing!

Hardy to zone 6b (-20.5 °C), this dwarf black fig can remain outdoors in some Canadian regions when planted in a sunny, sheltered location. Container-grown trees can be overwintered indoors in a bright space. Low-maintenance, high-yielding, and exceptionally flavourful, Violette de Bordeaux hardy fig is an outstanding choice for backyard growers.
