Clematis 'The Vagabond' has dark purple to violet-coloured blooms with darker crimson/ burgundy bars and contrasting creamy yellow stamens. The large flowers are 5-7 in (12-18 cm) and have a very long blooming season from late May all the way until October. This large purple-flowered Clematis is a short, compact Clematis variety, only reaching a maximum height of 6 ft, making it perfect for planting in a pot or container.
Clematis vines are most often planted near a trellis, patio wall, or some structure for support. They can also be planted sprawling over shrubs, stumps, or through perennial gardens.
Clematis is best planted in a location where the foliage and flowers are mostly in the sun, but the roots are kept cool and moist in the shade. Consider using mulch around the root zone in summer and fall. Pruning Group: 2
Pruning Groups:
Group 1 – Flowers only on old wood (previous year). Prune after spring flowering.
Group 2 – Flowers on both old and new wood. Little pruning should be done for woody-stemmed members of this Group. If cut to the ground or pruned in fall or spring, flowering will be reduced or delayed, but not prevented.
Group 3 – Flowers only on new wood. Can be cut to the ground in fall or spring.
