Ghost Fern (Athyrium 'Ghost') is a hybrid cross between two beloved ferns: the Japanese Painted Fern (A. niponicum 'Pictum') and Lady Fern (A. filix-femina). Ghost Fern combines the best features of both ferns - the silvery looking foliage of the former, with the upright habit of the latter!
Ghost Fern is deciduous, with soft greyish-green fronds with an overlay of silvery hues, giving it a 'ghostly' appearance. These fronds stand upright on contrasting dark maroon midribs, reaching a maximum height of 75 cm (2.5 feet) tall. Preferring partial to full shade sites, with moist soils, Ghost Japanese Painted Fern is a perfect choice for borders, or in the woodland garden as a slow spreading, clumping ground cover. The silvering of the leaves is most noticeable in the spring, as the fronds tend to become more greyish-green as the hotter temperatures arrive.
Athyrium 'Ghost' is taller than many other Athyriums, and is more tolerant of drier soils. The attractive foliage is beautiful in floral arrangements.
