First Dance Hellebore (Lenten Rose), scientifically known as Helleborus ‘First Dance’ WEDDING PARTY®, has fully double blooms reaching up to 6 cm (2.5 in) across. Gorgeous buttery-yellow sepals are painted with rich maroon picotee edging and fine veining that deepens beautifully with age. A chartreuse-to-lime green centre adds crisp definition and vibrant contrast. Each flower gently nods and seems to ‘dance’ on its stem, adding graceful movement and charm to the garden.
Hellebores are prized for their vigour, showy floral displays and large numbers of blossoms per plant. First Dance Hellebore is part of the distinguished WEDDING PARTY® Series, bred by Hans Hansen, showcasing richly coloured, double-flowered selections celebrated for their exceptional garden performance.
Often regarded as a harbinger of spring, hellebores are among the earliest perennials to bloom, bringing fresh life and colour to the garden. They provide an important early-season source of nectar and pollen for bees and other beneficial pollinators. Excellent for fresh cut floral arrangements, the blooms are also traditionally displayed floating in a shallow bowl of water, creating an elegant centerpiece.
After flowering finishes in May, the deeply lobed green foliage of First Dance Lenten Rose continues to provide texture and visual interest throughout the growing season.
Thriving in partial to full shade, hellebores are ideal for mass planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, along borders and in containers. They naturalize beautifully in moist woodland settings, where their extensive root systems gradually expand. Hardy to zone 4a, this double yellow Hellebore is low maintenance, drought and salt-tolerant, and resistant to deer and rabbits.
