Klavdija female Sea Buckthorn produces large quantities of orange-red fruits. The shrub is almost thornless, and can be picked by hand. This high yield variety is resistant to moderate drought. Unlike most of the Russian selections ('Chuyskaya', 'Altayskaya', 'Inya'), Klavdija can produce a decent crop during dry hot summers like those we tend to encounter on a more regular basis in Canada the last few years. Like most Russian introductions, Klavdija's fruit is noted for its exceptional flavour, and its sweeter taste. Female plants require a male species nearby to produce fruits. This cultivar is a late bloomer (late May to early June). In order to obtain a good crop, it is recommended to plant Pollmix male Sea Buckthorn (mid-season) or Lord male Sea Buckthorn (mid/late season)(data to be verified) near by. Typical orchards have 1 male for every 7 female plants. Sea buckthorn berries contain higher vitamin E content than wheat and soya, 30 times more vitamin C than oranges, and 5 times more than Kiwis. It also contains 3 times more Vitamin A than carrots and high amounts of omega 7 and omega 3. Orange berries and attractive greyish green foliage make this edible plant a beautiful landscape addition in the fall and winter months. Sea Buckthorn plants are also a great addition because they catch atmospheric nitrogen and redirect it into the ground.
