Fargesia nitida 'Great Wall' is a magnificent new clumping bamboo cultivar that is extremely well suited for a privacy hedge. Fargesia nitida is also referred to as Fountain Bamboo, Blue Fountain, Chinese Fountain Bamboo, or Hardy Blue Bamboo due to the fountain shape created by its slender, arching canes and foliage. Great Wall Fountain bamboo is very compact, densely clumping, and has several small branches with each node bearing abundant narrow leaves. Culms are a mix of green and greyish blue, which will become dark purple to olive-brown in sunlight.
Great Wall Blue Fountain Bamboo plant is a hardy clumping bamboo with excellent vigour that can quickly form a dense screen. It can grow up to 13 feet (4 metres) in height and 5 feet (1.5 metres) wide. Its root system is hardy down to -29°C, while its culms (stems) are hardy to -23°C. This clumping bamboo grows well under partial to full shaded conditions, but will be damaged by cold drying winds. It doesn't tolerate full sun exposure.
Like all other Fargesias, Fargesia nitida 'Great Wall' has a clumping rhizome and does not require root barriers to prevent its spread. Prune this winter hardy bamboo to maintain an upright shape. May to June is the ideal time for pruning. It can be used as a privacy screen, specimen plant, or can be grown in large containers.
