Chinese Wild Ginger (Asarum splendens) is a shade-loving perennial grown for its stunning variegated foliage. The elongated heart-shaped leaves are dark green with elegant, shimmering silver mottling. In June, 5 cm wide dark purple flowers bloom underneath the thick foliage. While not showy, the flowers of Asarum splendens are interestingly attractive.
A vigorous grower, Chinese Wild Ginger spreads via rhizomes. With a height of up to 20 cm (8 inches), and spread of 40 cm (16 inches), this plant makes a showy ground cover in shade or woodland gardens. Preferring moist and well-drained soil, the Chinese Ginger plant can also be grown as a border plant or in containers, provided it is in a partial to full shade site.
No significant disease or pest issues. A low maintenance choice for any shaded garden.
