Brandywine Purple Raspberry (Rubus 'Brandywine') is a hybrid cross between a red raspberry and a black raspberry, grown for its high yield of unique, purple berries. It produces large berries with a rich, tart flavor, typically harvested from mid summer to early fall. The fruit is ideal for preserves, baking, making wine, canning, or freezing. It makes one the best flavoured raspberry jams.
Rubus occidentalis x idaeus 'Brandywine' is a vigorous, upright shrub that reaches a mature height of 4 feet to 6 feet with a spread of 3 feet to 4 feet. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4-8, this floricane (summer-bearing) variety is self-fertile. The canes are very tall with prominent thorns, and suckers grow only from the crown, so the plant will not spread. Brandywine Raspberry is best grown in full sun.
