Black Negligee Bugbane (Actaea simplex ‘Black Negligee’) is prized for its dramatic stature and aptly named, chocolate-purplish to near-black lacy foliage. The deeply cut, fern-like, serrated leaves emerge green in spring before quickly maturing to rich, deep shades that contrast beautifully with the plant’s lightly coloured flower spikes. Rising skyward on dark stems, the long, slender, pink-tinted creamy-white inflorescences exude an exotic fragrance reminiscent of grape bubble gum and jasmine, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies alike.

A clump-forming perennial, Black Negligee bugbane offers greater vigour than other black-leaved cultivars and grows taller than most Actaea. Providing season-long interest, its striking foliage remains the main attraction until August, when showy, terminal racemes up to 30 cm (1 ft) long emerge, standing out dramatically against the dark backdrop and continue into fall.

Tall (1.5 m / 5 ft) yet compact (0.75 m / 2.5 ft wide), this statuesque bugbane is a standout in shaded borders and foundation plantings, as well as woodland and cottage gardens. Black Negligee Cimicifuga is equally stunning when massed or showcased as a specimen plant. An effective accent throughout the growing season, its elegant flower spikes also make excellent cut flowers for floral arrangements.

Thriving in consistently moist soil, Black Negligee Cimicifuga is hardy to zone 5a and requires minimal maintenance. Deer and rabbit resistant, as well as salt tolerant, it is a reliable and resilient garden choice.

Add exceptional texture and colour to your garden with this ‘lacy negligee’ and its elegant feathery boas - a striking contrast plant and certain conversation starter in any landscape.
