Wonderful Pomegranate Tree is good to its name! A stunning, fruit-bearing shrub that grows up to 8 feet tall and wide, it produces very large (to 5 inches in diameter), juicy, dark red fruit with a sweet-tart flavour, and small, medium-soft seeds. The flavourful fruits are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. This is the Pomagranate seen in most grocery stores. With minimal maintenance, a Wonderful Pomegranate bush will produce luscious fruits year after year. Has showy, large, red, double flowers (to 3 inches in diameter) from July to August.
Wonderful is self-fertile but planting a second variety nearby could improve fruit production. It takes 2 to 3 years for the Wonderful pomegranate plant to start bearing fruits. Under the right conditions it is not unusual to get fruit after the first year. Harvest fruits from September to November.
Plant in containers, and use for fruit production, as a specimen, or grouped to dramatic effect. Can also be used for Bonsai!
Punica granatum 'Wonderful' is hardy to zone 8a (-12 °C). It is recommended that you grow it in containers or planters, and bring it in a warmer area (inside a cold frame greenhouse for example) during the coldest winter months (from November to March). For proper growth, this pomegranate variety requires 150 chill hours (= being exposed to 150 hours below 10 °C). Wonderful Pomegranate tree is easy to grow, and mostly pest and disease free. It thrives best in full sun, and well-drained soil. Foliage turns a nice yellow in fall.
