Colombe de la Paix Calla Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Colombe de la Paix') is a prolific bloomer that has large, elegant, white, hood-shaped blooms with yellow spadix, on tall, fleshy stems. This wonderful cut flower selection has broad, luxuriant, glossy, green foliage. A staple in sophisticated, contemporary bridal bouquets and arrangements, this White Calla Lily blooms June to July.
A clumping perennial, it reaches up to 3 feet (90 cm) tall and 2 feet (60 cm) wide at maturity. Quite enjoys boggy soils, so don’t hesitate to grow it by water features, in wet borders, or the boggy end of the garden. White Lily-of-the-Nile grows in full sun to partial shade. Wonderful in planters and large pots.
Being hardy to zone 8a (-12 °C), White Calla Lily could be overwintered outdoors in zone 7a, if it is well protected (mulched and covered). However, it will need to be overwintered indoors in colder areas. Colombe de la Paix Calla Lily could be kept indoors at room temperature, in a vegetative state in a pot (it will need to be watered over the winter). Alternately, after the first frost (once the leaves are frozen and the plant has gone dormant) the tuber can be dug up and stored in a cold / dry room with other bulbs and tubers. The second method is likely to make the tubers go dormant for a longer period of time, which will encourage next year blooming.
While widely known as Calla or Arum lilies, Colombe de la Paix Calla Lilies are not really lilies – they are part of the Zantedeschia genus and originate from South Africa. *All parts of plant contain calcium oxalate crystals, an irritant to the mouth and esophagus. Toxic to cats and dogs.
