Takaka Pineapple Guava plant (Acca sellowiana 'Takaka') is an outstanding, new, self-fertile selection from New Zealand, prized for its large, sweet and tropical-flavoured fruit. The fruit of Takaka Feijoa Guava is early ripening and features thin, tasty skin. The red-flushed green fruit is pear shaped, 1-3" long and 1-1.5" wide, and has a minty strawberry flavour with hints of pineapple, guava, and sweet floral notes. The fruit can be eaten raw, or used for jams, pies, etc. Although it may take 3 to 4 years for Takaka Feijoa bush to produce fruits, it can bear fruit for up to 50 years!
Takaka Pineapple Guava fruit tree is an attractive small, multi-branched shrub or small tree prized not only for its fruit, but for its foliage and flowers too. The leathery leaves are green on top, and silvery-green underneath. The prolific, tropical looking flowers are white and pink with beautiful red stamens. As an added bonus, these flowers are edible! Having a cotton candy flavour, these flowers add colour to salads and are a pretty garnish to any plate.
Native to parts of South America, most of the selection and breeding work with Feijoa has been carried out in New Zealand. Pineapple Guava is slow growing to 6 to 8 feet in height and is beautiful as a specimen in a container to be brought indoors during cooler temperatures. Acca is hardy to zone 7a.
It is pest and disease-resistant, and prefers a sunny spot but will tolerate partial shade. Although Takaka Feijoa tree is self-fertile, planting two varieties (for example 'Kakariki' with 'Takaka') for cross pollination may contribute to more fruit production.
