Prolific Pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba ‘Prolific’) truly lives up to its name, producing abundant crops of large, flavourful fruit. It is considered a ‘Classic’ variety, having been discovered in the wild by dedicated fruit explorers.

Prolific Pawpaw is prized for often bearing fruit in its second year. The mango-shaped fruit ripens from September to October, though this variety is known to ripen early - be sure to harvest before squirrels and raccoons do!

The unique flavour of pawpaw fruit resembles a blend of banana, pineapple, and mango, with a smooth, custard-like texture. ‘Prolific’ is especially noted for being sweet and delicious. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh and in salads, or used in preserves, pies, vinaigrettes, and ice cream.

Pawpaws are highly nutritious, rich in vitamin C and magnesium, and contain more protein than bananas, apples, and oranges. They are rarely found in grocery stores, as the delicate fruit does not ship well or store for long periods.

Prolific Pawpaw trees are typically slow-growing and develop a pyramidal form, reaching up to 6 m (20 ft) in height. Cup-shaped, purplish-brown flowers bloom in May to June; although not showy, they are quite distinctive. The tropical-looking, elliptical green leaves can grow up to 30 cm (1 ft) long and turn a bright yellow before dropping in autumn.

Naturally disease- and pest-resistant, pawpaw is one of North America’s few native fruit trees. Asimina triloba ‘Prolific’ is hardy to zone 5a : -29 °C (-20 °F). It’s exciting to grow a tropical-looking fruit tree that can remain outdoors through snowy winters.

Prolific Pawpaw plant is low-maintenance and prefers well-drained, moist to wet soils. Best fruit production occurs in full sun, though the plant will also grow in partial shade.

To ensure proper cross-pollination and fruit set, two different seedlings or cultivars are required. Consider planting the native Asimina triloba or Mango Pawpaw nearby. Pawpaw trees typically have a lifespan of 20–30 years.
