Passiflora incarnata PINKPOP™, commonly known as PINKPOP™ Passionflower has large (up to 3”), fragrant, lavender-blue blossoms on vining stems. This passionflower can be trained along a trellis or fence, but prefers to free range. Grows quickly. Reaches 10 feet wide, and the length of vines seems to be infinite.
In cooler regions this passion vine will dieback to the ground, but in warmer regions it will need to be pruned annually. Makes an excellent ground cover. Produces greenish yellow fruits with the delicious, and sprightly flavor of tropical Passionfruit that are just as delicious as purple Maypop fruits, but even a little less astringent.
Maypop begins producing fruits 1 to 2 years after planting. Self-fertile, it will produce 3 – 5 pounds of fruit at maturity. The hardy passionflower fruit ripen in late fall.
Flowers, leaves and fruit are all edible. They contain the sedative qualities that were known and valued by the indigenous peoples of the Eastern US coastal ranges, where this plant is native.
