Rubus 'Marion' is the most widely cultivated blackberry in the world. Marionberry is a deciduous vine, and hybrid of two blackberries (a cross between the 'Chehalem' and 'Olallie' blackberry varieties), developed to improve yield and flavour.
Referred to as the 'King' or 'Cabernet' of blackberries, Marionberry produces huge, juicy, edible berries packed with a rich, sweet, and earthy flavor. The plump shiny black or dark red fruit is conical shaped, longer than wide, and filled with tiny edible seeds, like raspberries and blackberries. Best eaten fresh, or used for baking.
White flowers appear on long canes in the spring, and develop ripe berries by early to mid-summer. Marion Blackberry can self-pollinate, but having multiple plants can greatly increase fruit yield. The flowers are beneficial to pollinator species like bees. This shrub vigorously grows long, trailing stems and may be best planted along a wall, trellis, or staked to prevent tipping over. The stems may also sucker into new plants over time. Remove suckers and prune to maintain desired size of the plant.
