Okitsu Wase Satsuma Mandarin Citrus Tree (Citrus unshiu 'Okitsu Wase Satsuma') is an outstanding variety bearing very early ripening, easy to peel, flavourful, sweet, juicy fruit. Its naturally compact growth habit, prolific blooms in late winter and abundant, bright orange fruit make it a very attractive plant for container growing.
The fruit of this Mandarin Orange tree is most often eaten fresh due its ease of peeling, sweet taste, snackable size, and few to no seeds. It can also be used for juicing, in desserts and preserves, and in many Asian recipes. Okitsu Wase Satsuma Mandarin is considered one of the best tasting of all mandarins, and is the most popular cultivar sold in Japan.
Hardy to Zone 9a (-6.5 °C (20 °F)), Okitsu Wase Satsuma Mandarin Citrus Tree needs to be moved indoors during our cold Canadian winters. Grow it in a container in a sunny location inside, and it will help with the 'winter blahs' with its tropical green foliage, creamy-white flowers, and bright orange fruit. Move Okitsu Wase Satsuma Mandarin plant outdoors once the weather warms up, and it will be a beautiful ornamental specimen. Although Okitsu Wase Satsuma Mandarin is self-fertile, if blooming occurs in the winter, you can help your plant set fruit by taking a small brush and moving pollen from flower to flower.
This Mandarin Orange Tree is grown on Flying Dragon rootstock, which is hardy and very dwarfing for citrus; and induces very early flowering and fruit production. Trees grown on Flying Dragon will rarely exceed 5-6 ft in height, and will often produce fruit the year they are planted.
