Magnolia 'Susan' is grown for its compact, shrubby habit; its slightly fragrant, reddish-purple buds; and its late blooming habit (mid-April to early May). Magnolia Susan grows to 12 feet tall and wide. Its goblet-shaped flowers reach up to 5" wide, are purple-red to fuchsia with paler tones inside. Flowers may sporadically repeat bloom in mid-summer. It is a slow-growing, small tree that with long, medium green foliage that unfurls shortly after the flowers bloom. Foliage turns a bronzed yellow in fall.

Plant Susan Magnolia in a sunny area in the garden where its spring flowers can be appreciated. It is an excellent feature or companion tree. Makes a lovely shade tree, and the cut flowers are spectacular in arrangements.
