Biond Magnolia tree (Magnolia biondii) is covered in a profusion of small (up to 3.25”), lemony scented white magnolia blooms as early as late March. Blooms are followed by glossy, dark green, willow-like leaves. The highly fragrant flowers attract pollinators, although the flowers may take a few years to appear.
Magnolia biondii has mainly been used in North America as rootstock for grafting other ornamental varieties. Native in continental North China, where the climate is more challenging to Magnolias, its constitution is sturdier in cold, dry, high pH soils than Magnolia kobus.
Tree grows to 40 ft tall, and has a broadly conical crown. The Chinese Willow-leaf Magnolia does best in sun to partial shade, and likes well drained soil.
