Ivory Prince Hellebore (Helleborus ‘Ivory Prince’) is a prized for its rich burgundy-pink buds that unfurl into elegant creamy white flowers. Each 7 cm (3 in) bloom gradually develops soft flushes of rose and chartreuse as it matures, creating a beautiful multi-colour display lasting for at least two and a half months. An early bloomer - often beginning as early as March -it is a beautiful harbinger of spring. Cut a few blooms off the reddish stems and float them in a bowl of water for an exquisite centerpiece while the rest of the garden is still waking.
An award-winning selection, Helleborus ‘Ivory Prince’ received the 2011 Missouri Botanical Garden Plant of Merit designation and was named Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year in 2005. Originally selected in England for its vigorous growth, uniform crop prodution, upright and compact habit, and outward-facing flowers, it is equally admired for its handsome foliage. The deeply lobed, leathery, glossy leaves are dark bluish-green with distinctive silver veining, providing lasting ornamental value long after flowering.
Unlike "grown from seeds" Hellebore varieties , 85% of Ivory Prince Hellebore plants are expected to bloom the first year after vernalization.
Growing approximately 45 cm (18 in) tall and spreading up to 60 cm (24 in) wide, Ivory Prince Lenten Rose is a clump-forming perennial requiring part to full shade. It can be planted under deciduous trees or large shrubs where there is access to light during the colder months and protection from the sun in the summer. Helleborus prefers rich, moist, organic soil but adapts to most soil conditions and can tolerate some drought after the flowering period. Ivory Prince Hellebore is a great choice for woodland gardens or naturalized areas where its clumps will spread via seed, and can also be used for borders and edging in shade gardens.
Hardy to zone 4a and deer and rabbit resistant, Ivory Prince Lenten Rose is a reliable, low maintenance perennial. This white hellebore provides season long interest with early spring blooms that provide nectar for pollinators, and interesting foliage for the rest of the growing season.
Note: Helleborus ‘Ivory Prince’ is also known as Helleborus ‘Walhelivor’.
Caution: All parts of hellebores are poisonous if ingested.
