Fortune's Holly Fern (Cyrtomium fortunei) is a clumping, evergreen fern with an upright habit that reaches 1.5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Its light green fronds reach 2.5 feet long, and arch from the centre of the plant. Each frond has 12 to 26 pairs of bold, leathery, sickle-shaped pinnae.
An easy-to-grow shade loving fern, Fortune's Holly Fern can tolerate morning sun, but too much sun may bleach out the lovely leaf colour. They love to grow in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. Poor soil drainage will cause root rot. Japanese Holly Fern needs regular watering during dry weather.
Cyrtomium fortunei thrives in containers, borders, woodlands, and windy locations. Its long leaves make excellent cut foliage and can be used in bouquets and arrangements. This Holly Fern is deer and rabbit resistant.
