Hayward Fuzzy Kiwi Vine (Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward') produces large, rounded green kiwis that feature a fuzzy brown skin; and looks like what most people think of as a "traditional" kiwi. The juicy flesh is green, has a sweet and tangy flavour, and is filled with tiny edible seeds. It is sweeter than most green kiwi cultivars.
Hayward Kiwi is a popular commercial variety, commonly seen in stores, due to the fruit’s large size, attractive shape, and high yield. Hayward Kiwi Fruits measure 2 to 3" long (5 to 8 cm) and weight 70 to 80 grams. The large, green kiwi fruit ripen from early to mid-October, usually after the first light frost. It is ripe when it yields slightly under pressure.
This fast-growing woody vine can grow large and tall, reaching about 10 m in height. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. This vine is hardy to zone 7a (-18 °C or 0 °F). For gardeners living in colder areas than zone 7a, it is recommended to plant early in the season to give the kiwi time to establish; consider mulching around the roots in the fall; and cover at least the basal stems with a winter cover. Alternatively, it can also be grown in a large container, and be brought into a cold frame greenhouse during the coldest months.
Slightly fragrant, white flowers appear in June on previous years' growth, so pruning in the fall or winter is discouraged. 'Hayward' is an Actinidia deliciosa female (Female Fuzzy Kiwi) variety and will need a male, such as Actinidia deliciosa 'Tomuri', to pollinate it, and produce fruits. Only one male Kiwi plant is required to pollinate 6 to 8 females.
Native to China, the Green Kiwi or Fuzzy Kiwi, is locally commonly called "Yangtao", meaning "Strawberry-peach".
