Eastern Prince Magnolia Vine is an exciting deciduous vine that is prized for its attractive, crimson red, edible fruits, as well as its medicinal qualities. A selection from the Vavilov Institute at Vladivostok, this vine produces large clusters of alluring, tasty, bright red berries. The Five-flavour Berry fruit has a distinctive tart, lemony flavour and aroma, making it great for juices and jams. Eastern Prince Five-flavour Berry is a self-fertile variety that can produce fruit without other cultivars nearby. Fruits should begin to appear in about three years. Eastern Prince Schisandra vine blooms from May to June, and the berries ripen from August to October. One plant can bear up to 20 lbs of fruits. The sweetly fragrant, white flowers are beautiful, and look similar to Magnolia flowers. The stem, leaves, and roots have medicinal qualities and have been used in making rejuvenating and refreshing teas. Schisandra is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and is considered an ‘adaptogen’ - meaning it helps reduce stress, improve sleep, and benefit overall mental health. Eastern Prince Magnolia Vine is very cold hardy, and can grow in zone 3. It grows best in light shade with moist, well-drained soil on a trellis, fence, or structure to climb. This lovely shrubby fruiting vine comes to us from the mountains of China and Russian. It grows easily in Canada.
