A statuesque perennial, Chocoholic Bugbane (Actaea simplex 'Chocoholic') will grow to about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide at maturity. It is a slow grower, and can be leggy once grown. Its lacy, deep bronzed purple, almost black foliage is a great backdrop for its tall, mauvey-pink to white bottlebrush flowers. A wonderful foundation plant, especially when underplanted with dwarf perennials with contrasting foliage. Put it centre stage in large pots and containers for impact, and underplant with plants that have lime green and variegated leaves, with trailing vines and flowers. Chocoholic Snakeroot is a late summer, early fall bloomer with wonderful texture.
As an herbaceous perennial, Chocoholic Bugbane will usually die back to the crown each winter, and will regrow from the base each spring. If planted in pots, it will need to be overwintered in a cold frame. Prefers shade to part shade, and moist soil. Can tolerate some standing water. It is also known as Cimicifuga simplex 'Chocoholic'
