Boysenberry was nurtured and made famous by Knott’s Berry Farm in California. It is well known to produces the most wonderful sweet fruits. Boysenberry exact origin is unknown but it is believed to be a cross of raspberries, loganberries, dewberries and black berries. When fully ripe, Boysenberry fruits are a rich maroon color, with subtle shades of red. They have a soft texture and thin skins. The flavor is rich and complex, being slightly sweeter than a blackberry with a perfect balance of tartness. They are juicy, large, and look similar to an elongated blackberry (reaching up to 2.5 cm long, they are the largest berries in the Rubus family). Wonderful fresh, and in ice cream, syrup, juice, pies and jams.
Boysenberry (Rubus ursinus x idaeus) is a self-fertile, vigorous and prolific fruit producer from July to September. It is a summer-bearing (floricane) selection so the fruits are produced on second year stems. A trailing vine, it grows to 6 feet tall, and 6 feet wide; and requires support. Prefers full sun and moist to dry, well-drained soil. Easy to grow, disease and drought resistant.
