Helleborus ‘New York Night’ HONEYMOON®, commonly known as New York Night Black Hellebore, produces dramatic flowers measuring up to 7.5 cm (3 in.) across. The nodding, cup-shaped blooms display rich shades of purplish-black to near jet-black. This intense colouration creates a striking contrast with the creamy yellow stamens, which seem to glow at the center of each flower. A bright light in a dark New York Night!
Hellebores are prized for their vigour, floriferous habit, and impressive floral displays. New York Night Hellebore is part of the distinguished HONEYMOON® Series, bred by Hans Hansen, featuring richly coloured, single-flowered selections renowned for their exceptional garden performance and reliability.
Once flowering finishes in May, the deeply lobed, glossy-green foliage continues to provide texture and structure throughout the growing season.
Thriving in partial to full shade, hellebores are ideal for mass planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, along shaded borders, or in containers. They naturalize beautifully in moist woodland settings, where their robust root systems gradually expand over time. Hardy to Zone 4a, this black Hellebore plant is low-maintenance, drought- and salt-tolerant once established, and resistant to deer and rabbits.
Often considered a harbinger of spring, hellebores are among the earliest perennials to bloom, bringing welcome colour and vitality to the landscape. The early blossoms of New York Night Lenten Rose provide an important source of nectar and pollen for bees and other beneficial pollinators. This black-purple Hellebore makes excellent fresh-cut arrangements. The blooms are also traditionally floated in shallow bowls of water to create a simple yet elegant centerpiece.
