Winter Gold Winterberry is a slow growing, female, winterberry holly that produces a profusion of the most beautiful, golden-peach-coloured berries. Its colourful berries will hold all fall, creating interest along with its yellow-bronze autumn foliage. The large, luminous orange berries, against the bare, dark branches provide considerable interest in the winter landscape.
Typically growing to 8 feet tall and wide, Ilex verticillata 'Winter Gold' is multi-stemmed and suckering. It has a really nice, rounded habit. It tolerates wet and boggy soil. So, this Orange Winterberry Holly does well in pond margins, stream beds, or low-lying areas of the yard. Mass planted or in small groups, it performs well as an accent or hedge plant. Berries are a food source for birds.
This female winterberry plant will need a male Winterberry to pollinate its inconspicuous greenish-white blooms (one male for every 6 -10 females). Flowers bloom on new growth, so if pruning to shape, do so in early spring just before new growth appears. The foliage is also a food source for wildlife, including birds and rabbits. Deer tolerant. The long branches filled with colourful berries of Winter Gold Winterberry are used in fall and winter to make the most exquisite bouquets and winter arrangements.
The orange berries are quite showy and will persist throughout the winter and often into early spring.
