Valiant Grape (Vitis ‘Valiant’) is one of the hardiest grape varieties available, easily capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -40 °C. Specifically bred for short-season, northern climates, this purple grape ripens reliably by late August - nearly a month earlier than most grape varieties. Considered an early-season grape variety, Valiant only requires 900 temperature degree-days (900 daylight hours at 10 °C) to produce mature fruits.

Vailant Grapevine plant produces delicious, dark blue, medium-sized berries with a sweet, tangy flavour and no noticeable tartness. Although it is a seeded variety, Valiant is widely regarded as one of the best fresh-eating grapes for cold climates. It is also suited for making jams, jellies, juice, and wine.

Valiant Grape is a very vigorous, woody vine and must be grown on a sturdy support such as a trellis, pergola, fence, or other solid structure. Its three-lobed, palmate green leaves provide attractive summer shade and screening. Small, self-fertile, yellowish-green flower clusters attract pollinators and give way to abundant, compact bunches of fruit. While prized for their outstanding flavour, the grapes are also quite ornamental on the vine and are a strong attractant for birds and wildlife.

Plant this seeded purple grape in a sunny location with moist, well-drained soil. Vailant Grapevine plant typically begins producing fruit by their third year and show moderate resistance to common grape diseases, including powdery mildew and downy mildew. An excellent choice for a sweet table grape you can enjoy well before frost arrives.
