Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian steel' (Indian Grass) is also known as Wood Grass or Yellow Prairie Grass. It is a clump-forming, warm season grass, native to Canada. The Indian grass was once one of the most common tall grasses of the prairies.
'Indian Steel' features lovely blue-green leaves, copper coloured blooms and strong upright stems. It is moderately fast grower (faster than Sorghastrum nutans ‘Sioux Blue’).
Easily grown in average, it thrives best in dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerant of a wide range of soils including heavy clays. Does well in poor, dry, infertile soils. Avoid over fertilizing and over watering as both can lead to weak and floppy stems.
Great choice for sustainable landscapes, natural areas, and modern designs. This blue Indian grass makes great cut flowers either fresh or dried.
