Splendens Sea Thrift plant, scientifically known as Armeria maritima 'Splendens', is a compact, low growing perennial with delightful hot pink, globe-shaped clusters of flowers. The flowers, atop slender naked stalks, rise well above the grass-like foliage and bloom May to June. Deadheading the spent flowers will stimulate new buds, and may lengthen bloom time sporadically throughout summer.
Splendens Sea Thrift forms tidy clumps of 10 inches (25 cm) high and 12 inches (30 cm) wide, and works wonderfully as a border / edging plant, or for container gardening. It is also known as Splendens Armeria and Splendens Sea Pink plant, which refer to its native habitat along coastal cliffs, beaches, and gravelly tundra. Thus, the Sea Thrift is saline tolerant, thrives in full sun and grows best in dry, even sandy/infertile well-drained soils. The salt we Canadians often use along our walkways in winter will not bother these salt tolerant plants. This drought tolerant perennial is an excellent choice for xeriscaping and rock gardens.
Generally pest and disease free, Sea Thrift is a low maintenance, pleasing perennial.
