Saucer Magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia x soulangeana is perhaps the most popular deciduous magnolia in cultivation today. The fragrant, cup-shaped flowers grow to 10” across. They are pinkish purple on the outside, and white on the inside. The Saucer Magnolia tree blooms in early spring, and may bloom sporadically after the leaves appear. It is a handsome small tree, growing to 25’ tall and wide. Large leathery leaves, smooth grey bark (fragrant when crushed), and yellow fall colour all add to the seasonal interest. Makes a wonderful specimen. Plant where its scent can be appreciated every day. Make sure to cut blooms to bring its lovely fragrance indoors.
As the flowers of Magnolia x soulangeana appear before the leaves, they are more vulnerable to spring frosts and freezes. So, site the trees where they are protected from strong winds, but avoid sunny southern exposures that may cause flowers to come on too soon, and be damaged by frost. Generally intolerant of soil extremes (dry or wet). The roots of Saucer Magnolia grow horizontally, so they need a lot of room. Its roots do not grow invasively or deeply. Magnolia x soulangeana is mildly resistant to damage by deer and tolerates air pollution.
Saucer Magnolia is an hybrid of M. denudata x M. liliiflora. It is also known as Tulip Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia.
