Dicentra spectabilis 'Valentine' is a red bleeding heart variety. It is a spectacular new cultivar of bleeding heart, with large vibrant red and white, puffy, heart-shaped flowers. A “chance” seedling, it was discovered in British Columbia and brought to market in the 2000’s, over one hundred years since Dicentra spectabilis was first brought from China to the UK.

Valentine Bleeding Heart is slightly shorter than older varieties, reaching 30 inches tall by 36 inches wide when mature. Spring foliage has a tinge of purple to it, then appears deep green as the leaves expand. Valentine Old-fashioned Bleeding Heart produces dozens of arching flower stems with dangling, vibrant red flowers in the late spring. After this brilliant springtime floral display, the plants tend to go dormant in the summer, particularly if it is hot and dry.

In addition to making a great perennial in shade and woodland garden settings, Dicentra spectabilis 'Valentine' makes a great show in containers, and floral bouquets.
