Mango Pawpaw (Asimina triloba 'Mango') is the most vigorous pawpaw variety we offer. Considered a classic variety, it was discovered in the wild by dedicated fruit explorers. Mango pawpaw is prized for its large, flavourful fruit and attractive orange-yellow flesh. The fruit can be enjoyed fresh, added to salads, or used in preserves, pies, vinaigrettes, and ice cream. Pawpaws are rarely found in grocery stores because the fruit is delicate and does not ship or store well.
Pawpaws are typically slow-growing trees with a pyramidal form, reaching up to 6 m (20 ft) in height. The Mango pawpaw plant, however, is known for its more vigorous growth and can quickly develop into a small tree. Unique six-petalled, purplish-brown flowers bloom in May and June. Though not showy, they are quite distinctive. The tropical-looking green elliptical leaves can grow up to 30 cm (1 ft) long and turn a bright yellow before dropping in autumn.
Pawpaws generally begin bearing fruit within two to three years. The mango-shaped fruit ripens from September through October - be sure to harvest promptly before squirrels and raccoons do!
Pawpaw is one of North America’s few native fruit trees. Asimina triloba 'Mango' is hardy to zone 5a : -29 °C (-20 °F). It is exciting to grow a tropical-looking fruit tree that can remain outdoors through snowy winters.
