A stunning, Red Peony plant, Garden Candy® Candy Apple™ Itoh Peony has large (4 inch to 6 inch), double, candy apple red blooms with yellow anthers. An upright, robust cross between an herbaceous peony and a tree peony, this double red peony's flowers are held close to the foliage, creating a compact, rounded form that requires no staking, and most notably, has mildew-resistant foliage. Abundant blooms in June - July. Foliage stays attractive all season long.
Plant Paeonia Itoh Candy Apple™ Garden Candy® as a specimen or in clumps, or fill your cutting garden and home with its fragrant blooms. Makes incredible bouquets. This is the first commercially available double red Itoh peony on the market from breeder Don Smith. Prune back any dead leaves to the ground in early spring, taking care not to disturb the new buds emerging from the soil. Deer resistant, and drought tolerant once established.
The Itoh Peony originated in Japan in 1948 thanks to one man’s dedication and perseverance - Dr. Toichi Itoh, a noted Japanese plantsman and botanist. He spent decades crossing pollen from herbaceous paeonies and tree peonies, trying to find the perfect hybrid. Itoh Peonies are absolutely stunning and combine the ideal traits from both of their parents. They are short, bushy growers, like herbaceous types, that do not require staking, yet they support the large magnificent blooms of the tree peony. Itohs also exhibit exquisite tree peony foliage that turns lovely burgundy-orange colours each fall. Long lived peonies can live for upwards of 50 years.
