Dark Eyes Mullein is a stunning, sunny, short perennial with spikes of creamy yellow flowers accented with deep red-maroon centres, which attract hummingbirds. A compact plant with 8 inch, dense rosettes of large, crinkly green leaves, and 12 inch spikes of flowers, it thrives in a sun-filled location. (Does not like wet locations and requires good drainage.) A long bloomer – expect flowers from June to August. Use Verbascum 'Dark Eyes' in rock gardens, and the front of sunny borders. Wonderful thriller for bouquets of summer flowers.
Deer, and rabbit resistant; and drought tolerant. Dark Eyes Mullein will take 2 to 5 years to reach maturity. Remove flower spikes after blooming to encourage next year’s growth. Has a long taproot, so do not move it once it is established.
