Chocolate Chip Bugleweed is an extremely short perennial that is most valued as an attractive, creeping ground cover. The foliage of this bugleweed is shiny, narrow and oval shaped. They are chocolate, purple and dark green in colour. Chocolate Chip Bugleweed is known as an extremely dwarf variety, reaching a maximum height of about 0.25 ft (0.08 m). The flowers are a deep violet to blue, fragrant, and appear on short spikes in the late spring/early summer. These flowers are beneficial to local pollinator species, like bees and butterflies. Cut back spent flowers to promote plant health and appearance.
Ajuga tenorii is a much tighter, less aggressive spreader than varieties of Ajuga reptans, which makes it easier to control. This plant is easy to grow. It can tolerate full sun and full shade but typically does best in partial shade (4-6 hours direct sun). Chocolate Chip Bugleweed is also able to grow well in a range of soil types and moisture levels.
