In early spring, when there is little to be excited about in the garden, the Texas Scarlet Flowering Japanese Quince is a welcome sight. Fiery single red flowers that are apple blossom in shape emerge in the spring. Borne on thorny branches, they bloom in profusion before the glossy green leaves emerge. The bright red Japanese quince flowers give way to small greenish yellow fruits that ripen in the fall. Quinces are edible, but usually considered bitter and are better used in preserves and jellies. Chaenomeles x superba 'Texas Scarlet' is a dwarf cultivar. Growing up to 4 feet, it's a great addition to a small garden.
