Native to Eastern North America, Aronia melanocarpa thrives in low woods, swamps and bogs. McKenzie black chokeberry is a seedling selection offering improved vigour, good production and large clusters of white flowers. The cultivar has been selected for its erosion control and shelterbelt (windbreak) properties. At 10 feet tall, McKenzie Black Chokeberry makes a very efficient windbreak. It produces large, black, juicy fruits that can be eaten fresh, or used to make jelly. In the fall, the leaves turn a reddish-orange colour.
