Winky Purple and White Columbine is a bushy, clumping, herbaceous perennial. It is a variety in the Winky European Columbine series, which all have upward facing, short-spurred, bicolored flowers. The upward facing flower makes it appear to be is winking at you, thus the series name ‘Winky’. Winky series Columbines have also been selected for their good resistance to mildew, uniform shape and habit and strong stems. The beautiful deep purple and white flowers appear from the center of the plant in early spring on long, fragile stems.
These flowers make decent cut flowers in the spring and early summer. Additionally, the tubular flowers attract local pollinators, like hummingbirds and long-tongued bees. Aquilegia vulgaris 'Winky Purple-White' is easy to grow and is low maintenance. It does best with some shade and consistently moist soil but can tolerate dry soil and full sun as well.
