Burgundy Glow Bugleweed is a short, dense perennial cultivar that is most valued as an attractive, creeping ground cover. The showy foliage is variegated, tri-coloured with creamy white, rose burgundy, and dark green that really stands once it covers an area. The flowers are a deep violet to blue colour, fragrant, and appear on short spikes in the late spring/early summer. These flowers are beneficial to local pollinator species, like bees and butterflies. Cut back spent flowers to promote plant health and appearance.
Plant 15–20 cm apart to quickly establish a ground cover area. Avoid planting too close to other perennial beds and lawn because it can spread quickly into undesired areas. Burgundy Glow Bungleweed is a slower spreading variety of Ajuga reptans so it should be easier to control than other varieties. This plant is easy to grow. It can tolerate full sun and full shade, but typically does best in partial shade (4-6 hours direct sun). Burgundy Glow Bugleweed is also able to grow well in a range of soil types, moisture levels, and can outcompete undesirable weeds.
