Black Scallop Bugleweed is a short, dense perennial that is most valued as an attractive, creeping ground cover. The unique foliage is a shiny, dark maroon/chocolate purple colour that really stands once it takes hold. The flowers are a deep violet to blue colour, mildly fragrant, and appear on short spikes in the late spring/early summer. Cut back spent flowers to promote plant health and appearance. These flowers are beneficial to local pollinator species, like bees and butterflies.
Plant 15–20 cm apart to quickly establish ground-cover. Avoid planting too close to other perennial beds, and lawns, because it can spread quickly. Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is easy to grow. It can tolerate full sun, and full shade but typically does best in partial shade (4-6 hours direct sun). Black Scallop Bugleweed is also able to grow well in a range of soil types, moisture levels, and can outcompete undesirable weeds.
