Ohio Buckeye Tree (Aesculus glabra) is a low-branched, small to medium deciduous tree with a broad, oval-rounded crown. This native Ontario tree is also referred to as Texas Buckeye or Ohio Buckeye Chestnut Tree, and is smaller than other cultivars of Aesculus.
Bright green compound leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets emerge in the spring, and mature to darker green in the summer. The greenish-yellow flowers appear in pretty semi-pyramidal clusters mid spring. Autumn brings attractive yellow hues to Ohio Buckeye Tree foliage, interspersed with occasional oranges and reds.
Contained within a warty-spined dehiscent husk are 1-2 fruits. When mature the husk become a shiny dark brown colour with a light tan spot. The resemblance of this fruit to the eyes of a buck deer led to the well-known moniker - buckeye!
Aesculus glabra is hardy to zone 3a. It makes a great specimen tree, especially in native plant and woodland areas.
