Christmas Fern is a robust, low maintenance evergreen fern with a cascade of rich dark green, leathery fronds that reach up to 2 ft long. Aslo called "Dagger Fern", it is ideal for winter interest in the garden (although the fronds use their upright, cascading habit and lay flat on the ground creating bird habitat).
Prefers shade to partial shade, but will tolerate some sun. Use in shade gardens and woodland gardens, moist ravines and banks (will help stop erosion), and shady borders. Polystichum acrostichoides can also be used against shaded foundations, as an accent or mass as a great companion for wildflowers. This native fern is a slow grower that won't spread. It will grow successfully under walnut trees.
