Kaiteri Pineapple Guava plant (Acca sellowiana 'Kaiteri') is prized for its abundant crops of very large, sweet and flavourful fruit, which can weigh a half pound or more! The fruit is early ripening with thin, tasty skin. A spectacular, new introduction from New Zealand, the fruits are pear shaped and have a pineapple mint taste. The Kaiteri Guavasteen fruit can be eaten raw, or used for jams, pies, etc.
Although Kaiteri Feijoa Tree is popular for its fruit, the prolific and tropical looking flowers are also edible! The pretty white and pink petals with red stamens taste like cotton candy, and can be used in salads, or as a side garnish to "wow" your dinner guests.
The leathery leaves of Kaiteri Pineapple Guava bush are green on top, and silvery-green underneath. It is a highly attractive ornamental shrub. Native to parts of South America, most of the selection and breeding work with Acca (Feijoa) has been carried out in New Zealand. It may take 3-4 years for fruit production, but the tree can produce for up to 50 years. Pineapple Guava is slow growing to 6 to 8 feet in height, and is beautiful as a container specimen to be brought indoors during cooler temperatures. Acca is hardy to zone 7a.
Pineapple Guava is pest and disease-resistant, prefers a sunny spot for best fruit production, but will tolerate partial shade outdoors. Kaiteri Feijoa bush is considered partially self-fertile. Plant two varieties (for example, 'Kaiteri' with 'Takaka') for cross pollination and best fruit production.
