Shepherdia argentea is an upright, bushy, thorny, thicket-forming shrub. It is noted for its attractive silver-scaled leaves and branches, and its bright red fruit. The silver buffaloberry is equally at home at the edges of wet meadows, floodplains, streams, rivers, lakes, and springs; and in woodlands, foothills, exposed slopes, and prairies. It prefers full sun, but will tolerate dappled shade. A very hardy Shepherdia, it is drought and cold tolerant. It will grow in the poorest of soils. Silverberry attracts birds and is very beneficial to native bees. Its pea-sized ovoid, red berries ripen in the fall. Like Shepherdia Canadensis, the fruit is tart, and becomes sweeter after a frost. Mind you, you will have to compete with the birds for any fruit that late in the season. Although commonly called Buffaloberry, the fruit is not a berry, but a stone fruit.
